The Axe is registered as OA144 and has an original label signed by Lucas, dating the find to September 10th 1869.

The Axe

The overall length of the axe is 14.3 cm. It has an hour glass shaped shaft hole, this type indicates a fairly primitive series and is believed to show a hole bored by a stick and wet sand from both sides, which gives the hourglass, or countersunk effect, as opposed to later variants which show holes bored by hollow tubes of bone or metal with straight sides.

Like most British examples this axe has its perforation in the central position, equidistant from the hammer and sharp ends. This is a feature seen on most, if not all, British axes of this type.

A very similar axe classified in the same series was found at Bulford Down. This showed the same length and a very similar shape. It was found with the remains of its handle secured by a bone wedge and it is reasonable to assume that the Stand Low example was secured in a similar manner. The Bulford Down example was found with a man in a crouched position.
